    In a 3 node SQL Availability group - should the instance names be the same or unique? What are the pros and cons of having the same instance name for all 3 nodes or unique instance names?

  • Most that I see are default instances so they are all machinename\MSSQLServer

    Instance names are fine.  If you are only going to have one AG, then naming them the same might give clarity to someone looking at them in SSMS, but that's about it.

    The default instance of SQL Server Availability group replica is Servername, and named instance is Servername\Instancename. So whether you use the default instance or a named instance, the name of the replicas will be different.
