Why Win10 WDK download fails? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to download WDK 10.0.10586 for offline installation  from here  and it fails to download.

    What the ????

    Here is the log.

    win10 wdk setup error

The download location is removable usb drive.

IMHO my internet connection is OK. The machine is win10.1511, x64.

Updating metro apps on Win10 works fine. Downloads from Apple store are OK.

  • Hi Pavel A,

    I've found in your log
      [1F38:11C8][2016-04-19T01:01:14]w120: Detected partially cached package:
      package_WindowsDebuggingWDKIntegration_x86_en_us, invalid payload:
      package_WindowsDebuggingWDKIntegration_x86_en_us, reason: 0x80070570

As far as this error "0x80070570", I'm afraid that 1) a downloaded file is corrupted, or that 2) your RAM(memory) has something wrong.
    1) try to download again
    2) try to check your memory by MemTest86 or MemTest86+.

    Regards.

  • I suspect your USB flash disk is having errors (they don't last as long as they used to). Try downloading to a known good storage device, and then copy it to the flash disk. As a rule, this will be faster than trying to download to the flash disk directly from the internet

  • Thanks for your advises.

Brian: my USB disk is a WD "green" hard drive. It does not make noises, clicks, delays, other signs of write error, nothing in the eventlog. I've run chkdsk on it.  The main system disk is a SSD.

Ashidacchi: Memtest shows no errors and neither does the rest of Win10.

Also, no files or folders are ever created in the download directory (my log shows root directory of D:\ but I tried also subdirectories, with same result). I do not understand what of downloaded data fails verification because nothing is downloaded.

The setup failure occurs instantly after starting download.

  • Hi Pavel A,

    Thank you for your details.

You must have downloaded a WDK file into WD "green" connected to your PC via USB, but there is no WDK file in it.
This is my understanding. Is this right?  If so, it's very strange, unbelievable.

    1) Please try to use another drive. It's OK, whether it is an external USB flash memory or your local drive such as C-drive.
    2) I'd like to know file name which you've downloaded, and its URL (I cannot specify it from you've provided in your first post).

      (where did you click?)

    Regards.

  • Ashidacchi,

Normally it should download another copy of wdksetup.exe, then create subdirectory Installers and download stuff to the latter. In my case, nothing is created at the download location at all. Only some stuff is created in %temp%.

I've clicked here: (circled with red)

    Update:

Successfully downloaded it to a similar USB drive, on another PC with win8.1, where VS2015 is not installed.

  • Pavel A,

    Thanks a lot.
I'll try to reproduce what you've done, with my virtual machines (Windows 10 and Windows 8.1, VS2015 not installed in both).
(It's around 21, at night in Japan)

    Regards.

  • Hi,

The file "wdksetup.exe" which you taught is not a file for offline installation, but it's a seed of online installation.
After the file "wdksetup.exe" is executed... finally I could download it, and a folder "Windows Kits" was created.
    Here are screenshots.

In my case, downloading completed successfully.
Try to run "wdksetup.exe", and select local folder (refer to figure-1).
If downloading to your local folder failed, please check your internet connection and the drive you specified.
(I think a folder in USB flash drive larger than 1GB would be OK)

    Regards.

  • I do not understand what of downloaded data fails verification because nothing is downloaded.

Think, according to your log, there was 'something' downloaded:
    file
    'package_WindowsDebuggingWDKIntegration_x86_en_us'
    to directory
    C:\Users\pavel\AppData\Local\Temp\{39fdd508-112c-4e73-b736-c5378725b145}
which fails sha1 test in-place ( log shows no attempt to move it to final destination on D-drive). Besides 8AC539A9884F8F74B5B47B2E713FC6044B393388 is hash of resulting 'Windows Debugging WDK Integration-x86_en-us.msi'.
There were several retries yielding 5C163979AAEE0B29BAF733A00552BA8CAC855418, AD1E02549B050C940C4993E6E8FC78F9E9F26582 on your side, before installer gave up.

    With kind regards

Hmm, I don't know what to do with this, without digging too deep. The temp dir is on the Windows drive (the SSD) I really don't believe that the SSD or RAM are bad, because everything else works on this PC, Even installation of huge VS2015.

Ah, sorry. Wanted to 'exclude' your removable usb drive as culprit. And because my VS had trouble connecting to ms-server for a day, assumed some ms-server-issue.
But my 'approach' was too simple: download-> hash error -> delete file -> retry download-> hash error -> ... -> success -> move to final destination ...
For with garbage in %temp%\{39fdd508-112c-4e73-b736-c5378725b145} (putting a random file renamed to 'package_WindowsDebuggingWDKIntegration_x86_en_us' before starting installer) I get:

Web-installer then deletes directory, therefore a restart seems to have no problems regarding this file. So no idea ...

    With kind regards
