Hosting a asp.net web application on SP server? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Not sure where to ask this question but figured this was the best place (where developer hang out).

I wanted to know if anyone had any facts or opinions on whether or not you could host a custom web application built on asp.net 2.0+ with AJAX on the same server that is hosting SharePoint?  We just purchased some nice servers to host SharePoint for our intranet and our applications team wanted to know if they could move an application they wrote in C# on asp.net2.0 with some ajax onto the newer server.

Has anyone done this before without negative implications to the SharePoint environment?

Just so you know we have 2 quad core 64 bit servers with 16 GB of memory and only 400 users of which only 15 people may be using this application at a time.

    Thank you for your thoughts.

    Sincerely,
    T

  • You should be fine in using sharepoint server for other asp.net web application. However create a new IIS Web for your other applications and do not configure them under sharepoint web. keep Application identity pool seperate for your web app. Ajax has no issue with sharepoint. infact your sharepoint guys can use Ajax in custom development in sharepoint.

Servers you mentioned can easily handle the user load for sharepoint and asp.net apps. however if at any stage you feel that IIS response is slow, you may investigate what applications are consuming more memory (code not releasing objects etc) and fix them. but i dont think you will run into it.
