How to render video from a stream RRS feed

  • Question

  • First off, I'm a database guy, and not a graphics guy, so I'm working to catch up here.  Apologies if this is an obvious RTM question.

I am trying to develop a demo app to render video from a stream interface.

All of the interfaces I've found specify a filename for the source.

How can I point a stream (containing, say, the contents of a WMA file) to a control and have video rendered from it?

  • There are various technologies available that will allow you to render WMA/WMV files depending on your target platform and other requirements.  Since you've posted to the Media Foundation forum, I'm assuming you'd like to use MF  (Another alternative might be to use DirectShow).

The Media Foundation SDK is documented at: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms694197.aspx

There is a sample app in the Windows SDK that demonstrates how to build a basic playback application using MF.  Look under Samples\Multimedia\MediaFoundation\BasicPlayback.

You'd probably be interested in looking at how you could pass a byte stream into the IMFSourceResolver in order to have the media source read from your stream.
