Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 2 (KB3171021).

    General discussion

  • Hi everyone,

I'm trying to do a windows update on a server and I get all the time the following error:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 2 (KB3171021).

I've also tried to install manually this SQLServer2014SP2-KB3171021-x64-ENU , but no luck (it freezes on the start of the installation)

    Can anyone help on this?

    Regards,

    Tim Ribeiro

  • I also had problems applying the GDR on one of my VMs. I don't remember if that was the exact error code, though. In any case, my problem turned out to be trivial: I only had 1.5 GB of free disk space. After a cleanup, the install went fine.

  • Hello,

This issue is related to .NET Framework. Try the following workarounds:

    1)     Uninstall/disable .NET Framework and reinstall/enable it again.

    2)     Repair .NET Framework using the following tool:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135

    Try the last option first.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hello Alberto

    Didn't work!

When I try again the install manually from the SQLServer2014SP2-KB3171021-x64-ENU.exe,

    I get this error message:

    TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

    Access to the path 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\120\Setup Bootstrap\Help\help.chm' is <g class="gr_ gr_88 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Punctuation multiReplace" data-gr-id="88" id="88">denied..</g>

I've tried either extract the file and run the setup manually and also checked that my default installation location is on the drive c:

  • Hello,

This is a different error message, and the message is related to permissions.

Please provide full control access to SQL Server service account on the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server folder and subfolders.

Make sure the setup user account has the following rights also.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2000257

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Alberto,

Didn't work, I have added the account to the domain groups which is allowed for that folder as well, still not working.

  • Hello,

It appears that I am having a similar issue. When I try to install SP2 I get the same error Access to the path 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\120\Setup Bootstrap\Help\help.chm' is denied.

I've done the steps suggested to no luck. Any other ideas?

  • Hi,

I just fixed it. I renamed the help.chm file to help_old.chm and the installer recreated the file and installed fine. :)
