Encoding "3GP" and "3G2" files using Media Foundation RRS feed

  • Question

  • I would like to be able to Encode (.avi) and (.mp4) files into (.3GP) and (.3G2).

This does not seem to be possible using Microsoft Expression Encoder Pro.  And it is unclear if it is possible with Media Foundation.

Is it possible with Media Foundation?  If so, could you send a link to a starting point in the documentation?

If it is not possible, what are my other options.  FFmpeg?

  • MF has a 3GP media sink for recording 3gp files that can be created with the function MFCreate3GPMediaSink.  If you use the sink writer to handle the encoding, it will automatically use the 3gp sink if you specify a path with a .3gp or .3g2 extension when calling MFCreateSinkWriterFromURL.  You might want to take a look at the MFCopy sample on the MF blog to see how you can use the source reader and sink writer to do simple transcoding.
