Can't auto install driver from windows update? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I implemented one Extension driver and SoftwareComponent driver(these drivers version are ver.2) to perform firmware update of my USB camera. And I also already published these drivers to Windows Update.

I preinstalled the Extension driver and SoftwareComponent driver(ver.1) on Windows. Then plug our USB camera, Windows will install base driver and our own drivers(ver.1) for the camera properly. Next Windows will also create virtual device node(SWC\VID_1234&PID_5678) in Windows Device Manager because of SoftwareComponent driver. Then run Windows Update, Windows will update these drivers from ver.1 to ver.2. Please refer to the following figure:

Please refer to the next figure. My question is that: is it possible to install these drivers(ver.2) through Windows Update without preinstalling our ver.1 drivers?(it also means Windows doesn’t have the virtual device node(SSWC\VID_1234&PID_5678) of USB camera in Device Manager)

    Thanks for your reply.

  • It may be there is some clever hack, but I don't think there's a way to do this.  Because there's a built-in driver, there's no reason for Windows to go searching through the driver library.  There will have to be some manual operation to kick things off.

  • There isn’t a path without some manual intervention for immediate functionality.  However, a nightly update would eventually pick up V1 from WU automatically.
