Why is Pubcenter fill rate STILL so stupidly poor? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Since my last thread on this was locked with the standard "raise a support ticket" response, we'll try again:

Ten percent fill rate across all apps yesterday - raised only because one of my lower-yielding apps got lucky and managed to get a disproportionately high fill rate compared to all the others.

    Two percent so far today.

Mr. Gale, if you are reading this and think (and I quote) "fill rates appear to remain pretty consistent between markets" is an answer, then you're obviously missing the point, so I'll spell it out:

What the hell is happening that is causing almost nobody in the entire world (according to the argument that fill rates are consistent between markets) is using pubcenter to advertise? Has anyone in the pubcenter team actually thought "hey, this isn't working, we need to do something about this!"? If so, what strategy is being put in place? Are Microsoft in the slightest bit serious about breaking into advertising? If the answer to this question is "yes", then people need to be sacked, right now, for their utter continued incompetence.

Of course, if the answer is "no" then please tell us, the developers, so we know to stop wasting our efforts.

Can the Pubcenter team not see that all this is doing is driving away the developers - the very life-blood of the Windows Phone ecosystem?

Continually saying "we've made changes, things will get better" is just laughable - especially since most the changes have actually made things worse, with no sign of recovery.

For one, my team will no longer be making games that are solely ad supported - how our test go with other platforms and payment methods will be the determining factor in our long-term commitment to the Windows Phone platform.

At the end of the day - we have software licences to pay for.

It's time Pubcenter started making an effort.

Please get Microsoft to kill of PubCentre.  It is a very unfunny joke, and puts Microsoft in very poor light in the community.

Can you just admit Microsoft is either incompetent in this advertising field, or is simply not interested in promoting its services to advertisers (hence the very low fill rates)

Just put all us hard working Indie developers out of our misery.

  • Same here man. My earning has fallen down by 99.50%. Its so bad. I’m very angry with Microsoft. I’m thinking about quit from developing for Microsoft. I’ll look for solution for few more days. If no solution, then I’ll unpublish my all applications from Windows Phone.

  • Most of our players are US based, so I expected a little drop in the non-US revenue with this new geo targeting system. However as you can see from this month's ad performance, revenue has dropped to virtually nothing. I assume most publishers are experiencing the same poor results.

This graph shows the revenue from two of our most popular games (actual dollar amounts removed). The impression version of this same graph looks nearly identical.

By the way Smatoo CPM is dead low, Admob CPM is ok but has %99 fill rate!

  • hi,

How do you create WP project in admob? I found i only can create iphone and android in admob.

    Monday, February 17, 2014 12:41 PM
  • @Ben P1 - One of the main reasons we ask for a support ticket is so we can investigate your account, ad units, applications, performance, etc. This is not information you want to post (generally) on public forums nor is it information we will ever ask for in a public setting. Having said this, it is information we need to look into potential issues.

We know there have been a lot of changes over the last few months. All of changes are designed to create a stronger and more reliable ad serving platform. For example, the geographic relevance change may have impacted fill rates in certain markets but the ads provided are now more relevant to your users - in other words, it would make no sense to advertise an American restaurant to a user in the U.K. However, it would be useful for that same user to see an advertisement for a restaurant close by and in their area.

    Such Strong. Wow.

    Very strong.

Currently using MobFox+pubCenter+AdDuplex. Looking to kick pubCenter out. Any suggestions?

Also noting that a crap app of mine on the Android Play Store has been giving me exponentially increasing revenue (complete inverse of pubCenter) via AdMob despite me not pushing it at all.

    Sunday, February 23, 2014 2:34 AM
  • Same here too. Revenue down by 97% - From dollars to cents. I thought at least revenue from US will be decent since ad inventory in other countries were already known to be poor. From worse to worst. I did ask PubCenter to comment on recent changes they made, how revenue will be impacted. No replies so far. Not even graceful in replying. I also raised couple of tickets and everyone knows what they could have replied.

I am proposing the comments as answer since we didn't hear any official word on what's going on. (I didn't mean the generic answer Patrick Gale proposes) You should also consider the fact that 97% down in revenue essentially means you usurped the bread and butter from developer plate.

Sorry for being harsh. "No response for two months" just increases the frustration

  • @Patrick Gale, you are missing the very point that we (or at least I / one who uses pubcenter for 3 years) are seeing dip in US fill rate, eCPM and thereby revenue. Are you asserting that everything is clean from your side and it is just the developers who crib? The quantum of loss in revenue is so significant that the time spending in developing new / updating app is utterly futile. I have reduced the app update frequency and overall we are bringing the entire ecosystem down. From forums, I clearly see this is not an isolated incident. I long had passion developing on MS technologies. And still, it is the best development platform technically but pragmatically since the ecosystem doesn't help developers earn I could not voice that Windows Phone is the best platform overall.

  • @Astute Dev - We have acknowledged there was an issue with low fill rates and eCPM earlier in February. The fill rate issue has been addressed and we have seen fill rates rise back to previous values. We are still investigating the low eCPM and have active engagement on this issue.

Having said this, we also completely understand the length of time this has taken and just how frustrating these types of issues can be. Please be assured that this is (and will be until resolved) considered a high-priority issue.

  • Hi Patrick,

I am seeing some missing data between 2-6 am for past 5-6 days. Anybody seeing that ? Please generate an hourly report for all your Ad units for today and for last 3-4 days individually. For example, for today I am not seeing any data between 3 am - 6 am. Also missing some data for 2 am from India?  Anybody seeing anything odd?

    Tuesday, February 25, 2014 5:48 PM
  • I am seeing the same exact thing. That should be fixed till tomorow.

    Siril Dev

    Tuesday, February 25, 2014 5:58 PM
  • I agree with you, I figured that yesterday. As It was the same for yesterday no data between 2-6am . But today (regenerated for yesterday) it is showing some data between 2-6 am. But still it is missing data from some countries like India. Similarly, for past 3-4 days also. Please look more closely.

In other words. You are not going to see any data between 2-6 am for today. But if the problem continues then tomorrow the data for today will appear between 2-6 am which was missing. But if you look closely you will find it is still missing. In my case I know for sure it is missing from India. But I can't tell what other countries missing.

  • @Patrick, I was previously happy to know that Microsoft admitted issue and that you guys will fix the issue. The definition of "fix" should mean that it should be beneficial to publishers.

It is scary to know that you guys are trying to resolve the issue still. Please don't. Whenever you resolve / (claim to resolve) and adjust report, I see -20% payment adjustment. (No read again. minus 20% adjustment. meaning pubcenter will reduce the earning. This is cruel and foxy. So please stop resolving the issue. I am happy with 5 cent rather than taking home 4 cent after you resolve (or continue to resolve) the issue.

I think you follow the right strategy. Penalize 20% revenue from developers and offer them 5% increase next month. They will think that things are improving.

At this rate, I think pubcenter will charge publishers to show ads. @Patrick, we see -20% adjustment now. Let's try to surpass -100% mark. Publishers have to pay pubcenter then. You can do it. Come on

  • @Astute Dev - The adjustments you are referring to are all addressed in the sticky post I made a few days ago. Please see the below article for more details.

    Recent payment adjustments

To clarify - all of the negative adjustments in December and January will be tacked on to total February earnings which will be seen in the Payment History section of the UI.

    Wednesday, March 12, 2014 6:35 PM
  • Hi Patrick,

Regarding the specific adjustment amounts, are the amounts displayed the final result of the adjustments? I do see that they have been added to Feb earnings, but the amounts are incredibly small relative to the time the reporting was having problems and the performance during the rest of Dec. Specifically, in my case the added earnings amount to 0.0078% (less than 1 percent) of the total earnings for the month of Dec. This is a little confusing as the amount of missing data seemed to be significant and persisted for more than a week. I would expect the adjustment to be much higher.

    Wednesday, March 12, 2014 7:28 PM
  • No. Positive adjustments are less than negative adjustments.

Overall the MoM revenue since December is fraction of what I was receiving previously. Looks like reinstatement is not going to be the solution for me. I am tired tracking this issue. I have  stopped updating the app anyways.

I don't want to risk my time and money relying on pubcenter anymore. Thanks for dragging this issue for long without providing proper resolution. This is definitely an eye opener

It will be great if people can share their insight about how they found ad platforms other than pubCenter.

  • Guys, I'm a new user using pubCenter.

I know that this problem happened on February, but I noted that it is occurring this month for me.

Is anyone having the problem again?

  • I have the same problem between March 24 and 26, my impression decrease.

The eCPM is very low too since 27th of April, 0.03 or 0.02.

    Monday, March 31, 2014 7:39 AM
  • Same drop here. Requests halfed from 23rd to 24th. Since the "requests" are halfed i assume this is again a reporting bug on Pupcenter side. I would like some clarification if this drop in impressions after the 23rd will be adjusted retroactively.
    Monday, March 31, 2014 10:18 AM
  • Yeah, it's interesting, that. Fill rates appear to have been improving, but falling eCPM have balanced it out so that the return is still crap... very suspicious.

  • I follow this forum since six months, enough of discussion over here and banging our head in this forum to get things right.

Developers are putting effort to make apps and they are getting peanuts in return.

pubcenter will improve if Microsoft advertising take control over it, till that time whatever we do in this forum its waste of time because there is no one here to resolve it.

We post our issue here and you get answer we are working on it. In top of forum there is sticky post which updates with issue pubcenter is working on or the issue got fixed and the sticky post continues with working on and issue got fixed.

My 2 cents if you are Microsoft fanboy or passionate about Microsoft create apps for learning and hobby. If you get few dollars use it for beer not for living.

  • Fill rate still low (15%). Last week they said they fixed something. I see no change.

    Monday, May 19, 2014 1:30 PM
  • My fill rate has dropped significantly since March - was always ~90%, now it's sitting at a pretty steady 35%...eCPM has been atrocious since February - $0.04 to $0.15 ... it's finally going back up a little, but I've only hit about $0.25 now. Terrible compared to when I started out..

KHemant - out of curiosity, how does AdShuffr compare to AdRotator?

  • 3.7% fill rate for my app today. Need I say more. Actually I've given up on pubcenter a few months back. Nothing any of us say will change anything. Fat hope. The entire pubcenter team should be replaced. Really doing a terrible job!
