Visual Studio 2015 Update 2 Fails to Install RRS feed

  • Question

  • This is the 10th time I'm trying to install Visual Studio 2015 Update 2 and each time I'm trying to install it on a fresh copy of Windows installation.

I have just formatted my computer and installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro and then I took the image of my disk because once this installer fails the Visual Studio no longer works. It gives lots of error messages on startup and then stops loading any kind of project with a fatal error message at the end:

So, every time it fails, I go back to my image without any Visual Studio installation and start all over.

You may guess how painful is this process and I could not find a solution yet.

    Things I've tried so far:

    1. First of all, I've managed to install the Visual Studio 2015 Community Edition without Visual Studio 2015 Update 2 successfully. And then I immediately took a new image backup of my disk. From this point, I'm using this pre-installed image backup when things go wrong.

    2. I also managed to install Windows 10 SDK and Windows 10 Emulator successfully (using stand-alone installers) and again I took the new disk image.

    3. Reminder: Now my disk image backup contains successful installations of:

    a) Windows 10 Pro  (Geniue)

    b) Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Business (Geniue)

    c) Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Community Edition (Without Update 2 - only base features)

    d) Windows 10 SDK

    e) Windows 10 Emulator (Intel emulator option is already enabled on my BIOS settings therefore I could manage to install this with success)

    4. I tried to re-run the original Visual Studio installer (from ISO) and then install the Update 2 - Failed

    5. I tried to click on the Notification inside the IDE to install the Update 2 (which redirects me to vs2015.2.exe) and then install the Update 2 - Failed

    6. The error message I am getting when trying to install the Update 2 is always the same:

Visual Studio 2015 Update 2 Bug Installation Fails

Since my Windows installation is brand new (geniue and already activated, installed ALL available updates from Windows Update) this seems a major bug to me.

I searched the net about the error code but nothing came up related to Visual Studio. (And I must say I'm very surprised that noone else had this problem before)

  • Dear ronitovi,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

How did you install the VS 2015 update 2? If you used the web installer before, I recommend you download a healthy ISO file of VS 2015 update 2 from https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs and use it to repair. Before it, please use the FCIV.exe tool http://blogs.msdn.com/b/heaths/archive/2011/03/25/verify-the-iso-checksum-for-visual-studio-2010-service-pack-1-before-installing.aspxto validate the SHA-1 value of the ISO file, the value of Visual Studio 2015 update 2 is “269FA5FE823263718DA056D465BF8EB19C87ECD8”. Only this 2 values are the same, that means the ISO file is integrity and you can use it to repair, then see if the same issue will occur or not.

If you already used the ISO file, please use the above tool to check the integrity of the ISO file, in case the ISO file is corrupted.

According to the error code “0x80070490”, it’s often means a windows update error, please have a look at this KB document: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/958044

    1. Use System File Checker to repair damaged Windows files to repair damaged Windows files, run the command: sfc /scannow in the elevated command prompt, then try to install windows update again, after that, re-run the update 2 installer as administrator

    2. Run the DISM tool to fix Windows update corruption errors: run the command: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth in the elevated command prompt

BTW, since you can successfully install VS community 2015, can you please have a try to install VS 2015 update 1 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49989, see if the update 1 can install or not?

If the issue still persists, I need your help to collect the VS installation logs. Please use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.zip from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://skydrive.live.com/ and share the link here.

    Best regards,

    Sara

  • I'm having similar issues with installing Update 2. I've tried on two different computers.

On the first one I've upgraded using the file downloaded from within the installed VS2015 update dialog. It got stuck trying to update Typescript, and after more than 5 hours I had to kill the install process, It would not stop gracefully. I restarted the installation, but it stopped immediately saying that I already had Update 2. I tried to start VS and it failed with an error about missing components. I tried a repair and got many "Unknown error" dialog boxes popping up after every component installation. After this VS still doesn't start. I'm now uninstalling and trying from scratch.

On the second computer, I started the update from a fresh ISO file. After launching the installation I got a message that updated setup components were available to allow a better setup experience, it went on for a while and then I got an empty dialog with just the three buttons Modify, Repair, Uninstall at the bottom. If I select modify, I see that the main VS entry in the component list is still Update 1. I've tried again with the web installer and get the same, no way of actually updating to Update 2.
