How to restore model database RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am doing atest of what happens if model database .dmf and .ldf files are mssing. I tried to do a reapir from installatio CD but it failed that it cannot find model.mdf file... Then waht is the puprose of reparite.

    Since my master database and msdb databases are intact and I have backups of model database; how can bring my sql server 2008 instance up. I have read many article son internet but nothing works. When I try to rebuid master database, it gives some error;

    2013-03-24 02:08:59 Slp:
    2013-03-24 02:08:59 Slp: Error result: -2068643838
    2013-03-24 02:08:59 Slp: Result facility code: 1203
    2013-03-24 02:08:59 Slp: Result error code: 2

    But I should not have rebuild master database because master database and msdb databases are intact. errorlog only shows problem with model database.

  • Thanks for the useful link.

    Another question, if I ever restore master database from a backup; do you retsore msdb and model as well. I think not.

    I know when one  rebuilds a master database, it also rebuilds msdb and model databases and then one has to restore  them from backups. But, I did not rebuild master database, just restored it; it should not require restore of msdb and model.

  • Hello,

    Yes, you can only restore the master database from a backup.

    Please see:Restore the master Database
