Required suggestion for developing knowledge portal RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am trying to create an Knowledge portal for my project.
Right know we are having so many Pdf's present in a specified
location.we are coming up with an application which needs to behave as
like as MSDN. Especially if a search happens then all the files which
has that search string needs to be displayed .
Could anyone suggest me on what approach i can follow to implement
the same.i.e Is there any API/tools/commands available to do the
operation which i mentioned above or Microsoft already offers any API
to implement custom application similar to MSDN.

    Regards,
    Santhana

  • Hi Santhana,

The best tool from MS on this is MOSS 2007. This has excellent collobration capabilites which are needed for any KM portal.
    Features like
    Search
    Wikis
    Blogs
    Discussion forums
    Document management

All these are out of the box and can be implemented easily and has great productivity benefits as well.

Custom buliding this app will be huge effort without MOSS

Let me know if you need any specific details.

  • Hi Krishnan,

We have implemented Knowledge management portal for my companies using MOSS.
You have first to identify and segragate the department based on their information and security needs.
Based on that, you will have to seperate site collections and intranet zones.
NOw based on user roles, you would also have to create AD groups.
Then you have to create information architecture for your organisation in which you will identify taxonomy  for classifying documents/discussions/etc.
Now you could set up communities, forum etc and user can discuss and map them with identified taxonomy for better searchability.

This was you could set up Knowledge management easliy, though you might required some custom development as well. However the effort required will be less compared to make a whole custom .net application from scratch.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers
