VISTA and aspnet_regsql.ext RRS feed

After updating my system from XP to VISTA, I am no longer able to access my databases.  Using the ASP.NET configuration tool, I find that I need to use aspnet_regsql.exe to re-establish the connection.  However, aspnet_regsql.exe is not on my computer.  I think VISTA erased it.

    Now where?

The aspnet_regsql.exe is installed with ASP.NET 2.0 under your C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.xyz directory. If that utility is missing, my first guess is that more than likely your ASP.NET install got hosed some how, I would simply re-run the installer and see if that adds that aspnet_regsql.exe back on your system for you.

Did you find a solution or are you still stuck with this?

You may be running into permissions issues with Vista UAC (User Access Control).

Make sure you are running the latest service packs for the Express editions for improved Vista support.  This article has more information pertaining to SQL Express and Vista:  http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2006/11/15/sql-express-sp2-and-windows-vista-uac.aspx
