BingMaps on Windows RT RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've got a tab with Windows RT and gps, and i find it ridiculous when there is no app to use the gps without the internet connection. Either in iOS or android you can find plenty of apps that work well, but since there is none here, MS should really work to shorten the gap to its rivals. A simple download of the áreas you want in bing maps would work. GOOGLE has done it, so why dont you?

  • Hi there,

Most RT devices don't have a GPS so that the only way the device can get access to the users location is via wifi triangulation or IP address look up. Both of which require an internet connection.

If you have a device that has a GPS device then you can get the users GPS location without an internet connection. All Windows 7 and about devices have the Windows Location Services installed in it out of the box. This is a local service that will use your GPS device if it is installed. However, not that most GPS devices do not have drivers for Windows RT.

As for the maps, Bing Maps can't be used offline, however cached maps seem to work fine with the Native control. Downloading an area of the map for offline use is against the terms of use of Bing Maps.
