32bit applications suddenly starting to crash on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We've just started to experience an issue whereby it appears that all 32bit applications are no longer able to run on the server (Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 + all updates installed), we have no anti-virus installed on the server, it is a VM (running in Azure) and been running for a number of years now.  Running a chkdsk on the drives shows no errors, the server has been rebooted and power-cycled a number of times to no avail.

Checking the event log there are no errors listed apart from when trying to run 32bit apps and the below information is generated.

Until the issue appeared there had been no new installs of updates etc, however I have since applied all available updates to Windows and this still hasn't resolved the issue.

When attempting to run any 32 bit application I receive the error message below:

The event log shows the following for the last app  I tried:

Faulting application name: TreeSizeFree.exe, version: 3.0.1.200, time stamp: 0x533d1885
Faulting module name: ole32.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17514, time stamp: 0x4ce7b96f
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x0004ea5c
    Faulting process id: 0x1240
    Faulting application start time: 0x01cf7f03a0af7bfa
    Faulting application path: E:\Program Files (x86)\JAM Software\TreeSize Free\TreeSizeFree.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\Windows\syswow64\ole32.dll
    Report Id: def12e77-eaf6-11e3-add5-00155d3ac80b

Depending upon the application will result in a different module being affected, sometimes its ole32.dll, then ntdll.dll etc.

Running 'sfc /scannow' I receive the following warnings / errors shown below, I have a a few more listed further up the file but the same text:

This server currently doesn't have a valid backup to restore from unfortunately, and I'm trying to avoid a rebuild as it runs some core software.

Anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this? There appears to be quite a lot out there on the internet with the similar issue however nothing seems to resolve my issue.

    Marcus
