  • Hello,

For SQL Server we have SP = Service Packs and CU = Cummulative Update; both are Kind of "patches" and there is no difference if a security issue or a bug is fixed with. Both are depolyed as an installation program to apply it to a SQL Server instance.

  • A hot fix is a fix for a Special (urgent) issue reported by a user; several Hotfixes are combined to a CU; see for example: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2931693/en-us#hfi

  • if you found any issue and if Microsoft also confirmed its bug, then MS will correct that issue and will release a hot fix for that specific problem.

SQLServer service packs are cumulative, meaning that each new service pack contains all the fixes that are included with previous service packs and any new fixes.
