Remote Target Driver Debugging Issue in VS2015 RRS feed

  • Question

  • All,

I am developing a windows driver in VS2015. I have successfully installed the WDK for 8, 8.1, and 10 and the corresponding SDK's. I'm following the instructions located here for setting up the remote target vm in VMware Workstation 12.5:

    https://www.codeproject.com/tips/545835/kernel-mode-debugging-in-a-vm-using-visual-studio

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/drivers/gettingstarted/provision-a-target-computer-wdk-8-1

Everything was working great until I get to the step to add the target device in VS2015:

Driver -> Test -> Configure Devices -> Add New Device

When I enter the display name of the target VM which has the named pipe configured, the "Next" button is greyed out in VS2015 so that I am unable to proceed. I've spent many hours reading various MSDN and other articles and I can't seem to figure out why "Next" is greyed out when trying to add the target computer. Can someone please help me out with this?

  • Not sure, if it matters in this case, but Visual Studio versions and WDKs are paired. WDK 8.1 depends on VS 2013, WDK 10 on VS 2015.

'Display Name' is an arbitrary name. Important is 'Network Host Name', the name of the target.
If input field 'Network Host Name' is not visible increase size of dialog 'Device Configuration.

    With kind regards

  • You're absolutely correct. The dialogue window for adding a new device was popping up too small. Since this is my first time configuring a test device with Visual Studio, I didn't know what the window would look like. After expanding the window, I was able to enter the "Network Host Name" and proceed with my testing. Thanks again for your help!
