How long after a delete does a storage sccount name become available? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a personal subscription that I used to develop some stuff. It's grown to the point where I can now make my service publicly available.  I want to "move" all the stuff to a new Azure account/subscription owned by the new company that I have formed to sell my service.

I know I can't rename or move a storage account between subscriptions, but if I delete it in my personal subscription, how long should it take before that name is available for use in my new subscription?

    Thanks.

    J

  • Hi, Yeah you can definitely go ahead and do it.

Usually it takes few seconds for any azure service to make the name available again once you delete it, however I found it is quick and should be available immediately.

Actually you can move storage accounts from one subscription to another provided you're the owner on both subscriptions and both subscriptions have the same country in billing address. Just open up a support request and let them take care of it for you.

Regarding the time, you can't really predict. It all depends on the amount of data that needs to be deleted. For example, if you delete a table from a storage account it actually takes at least 40 seconds to delete that table (Ref:  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dd179387.aspx --> See Remarks section). Furthermore, I believe that if you delete a subscription they keep it there for 15 days so that you can take a backup of your data.

My recommendation would be to reach out to support directly on this.

    Hope this helps.
