Kinect v2 IR Modulation Firmware for Multi-Device Overlapping Field of Views RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

     In research paper:

Bhandari, A., Feigin, M., Izadi, S., Rhemann, C., Schmidt, M., & Raskar, R. (2014). Resolving Multipath Interference in Kinect: An Inverse Problem Approach. SENSORS, 2014 IEEE, 614-617.

(sorry, forum won't let me post HTML or links yet)

Their experiment used a Kinect v2 Sensor with "modified firmware that allows custom modulation". The paper was co-authored by MSR. So, I presume these MIT students collaborated with MSFT to develop this firmware. In the principals of Time-of-Flight cameras, modulation is a technique that can reduce multi-device interference.

Is there an official way I can get that firmware?

    Thank you

  • Hi there,

I came across this research too. It is very interesting, with potential to dramatically improve the kinect v2 accuracy in the presence of multipaths.

But I don't think Microsoft plans to release the modified firmware anytime soon (the kinect license clearly states that the firmware shall not be modified). I only hope I am proven wrong...
