Http 404 page not found sharepoint 2010

Hi,

I have issue while opening the sharepoint site. that giving the message like 404 page not found.

when we create the sharepoint new site it working fine.only the problem with existing sites

I've seen this type of thing when a masterpage has been set on a site and then a solution containing the file has been retracted so it no longer exists.

I would first check that the sites masterpage is corrctly set. You should be able to still open the site with SharePoint Designer and then reset the masterpage here.

The other option is to tack "/_layouts/settings.aspx" on the end of the site URL and change the masterpage there if you have publishing enabled.

The other thing it might be is a missing page layout. You can reset a pages page layout via site content and structure.
