Well, Visual Studio 2005 needs a patch to run on VISTA, otherwise it crashes frequently. Also, it needs Service Pack 1. I would advice you to install Visual Studio 2008 + Service Pack 1 with SQL Server 2005 + Service Pack 3. Both Service packs can be found out on Microsoft downloads site. Or just google them. By using the latest verison, you will also have ability to test out new features like LINQ.

You can go for VS2008 with service pack1, regarding db you dont have to install anything extra since sql2005 express edition is packed with vs2008 professional edition. If you are using it on home pc express edition is more than enough, and it won't degrade your system performance. if you are experiencing any problem while install plz go through this link

see using the version of visual studio depends on your requirement, all the  versions are good, VS2005 can be installed in vista also vs2008, it depends on your requirement and interest. same as the way to database, if you wanna use SQLSERVER have only it, else u can have any number different database software either oracle/mysql or anything. but installing all the softwares reduces your system memory technically this will result in slow performace of your PC, so its recommended to make use of relevant software installed. if you have any queries regarding the installation process or problems in developing you can post in forums.

Note: when you are installing softwares on vista OS remember you run the VS under Administrator, this avoids many silly problems.
