    what is the simplest way to send mail thru the local SMTP server and the simplest way to set up the SMTP server

    what do you mean by local smtp server? do you want to use your hosting server or gmail?

    try this code..

    SmtpClient SmtpServer = new SmtpClient("smtp.gmail.com");
    SmtpServer.Port = 587;
    SmtpServer.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential("username", "password");

    Fill source...Asp.Net Email

    When you are using the local IIS SMTP service, set the DeliveryMethod to PickupDirectoryFromIis. For example:

      smtpClient.DeliveryMethod = SmtpDeliveryMethod.PickupDirectoryFromIis;
