Prerequisite to add Domain Member Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • If am adding a member server to a Domain controller (running Windows Server 2008 R2) do I have to install (only) "Active Directory Domain Services" (without doing the dcpromo or equivalent method) on member server before adding it to domain controller?

  • Adding a member server to Active Directory.

There is no requirement to add any roles or features to a member server.

On the Network Adapter / Configure the static IP / Mask / Default Gateway / DNS (typically the Domain Controller running DNS).

Join the server to the Domain using Control Panel / System / Advanced System Settings / Computer Name / Change / Member of Domain > enter the FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) or Domain NetBIOS name

The credentials dialogue box will appear / enter the Domain Administrator user name / Password.

The sever will join the Domain and will be a "Member Server".
