Is the a way that I can enable the windows 7 start menu and keep the metro aswell.
I did find a mod on my last install but using that dissabled metro and i couldnt see how to get it back so i re-installed windows
I quite like some of the new features but I feel taking away the start menu was a big mistake

Lots of options found with a search, but my favorite is http://windows8startmenu.codeplex.com/ This is a gadget that shows if you are in the windows 8 mode or old mode on the desktop, and can change with a click on the gadget. It's instant and seems very stable. You can see more about it here http://blakehandler.wordpress.com/2011/09/27/microsofts-codeplex-releases-windows-8-startmenu-gadget/

Try a search. The real underlying function that these do is to change a registry setting. I've found it before, but really wanted to be able to switch back and forth easily. This is a preview and should probably be evaluated or tested against the way MS intended it to run. Making it permanent sort of defeats the purpose of preview IMHO.

I agree with you there. I didnt want to disable the Metro UI I wanted microsoft to reconise the issue and see the benifits from having both. the desktop could easily contain the old start menu with a link within the start menu to open the Meto UI. I respect what microsoft are doing, for people who dont know their way around a computer it is probably a great improvment, but for all of us that use windows fully and understund how to get everywhere quickly should have to abbility to use both.Sunday, October 9, 2011 4:29 PM

I agree with that. If I could find a shortcut, link, whatever, to Metro from the Old (look at that, I'm calling it the old) Windows Start menu, it would be loaded on my copy :) I'm not totally adverse to leaving the Start Menu alone and just swipping the charms in to get to Metro. I figure, 9 times out of 10, if I'm going to Metro, it's because I am, or will shortly be, in Tablet mode.Sunday, October 9, 2011 6:34 PM
