SharePoint problem with Excel patch KB3055034

    Question

  • We are having an issue with a patch that was released on October 13 for Excel (KB3055034).  Ever since this patch was applied to our desktops, Excel crashes when attempting to open spreadsheets on SharePoint.  Excel also crashes when attempting to select a list and then choose Export to Excel.  The error generated in the Application log is as follows:

Faulting application name: EXCEL.EXE, version: 14.0.7160.5000, time stamp: 0x55fc2723

Faulting module name: mso.dll, version: 14.0.7159.5000, time stamp: 0x55ea7be6

    Exception code: 0xc0000005

    Fault offset: 0x0000000000188864

    Faulting process id: 0x1f60

    Faulting application start time: 0x01d10b675fe2ad7a

    Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\EXCEL.EXE

    Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\office14\mso.dll

Does anyone know if Microsoft is working on resolving this issue. Also, does anyone have a workaround other than removing the patch?

    Thanks,

    Barbara

  • The patches in the December 2015 Patch Tuesday fixed the functionality that was broken by KB3055034.  Many thanks to everyone who provided input and created tickets to encourage Microsoft to fix this issue!

  • You will want to remove this patch. As you've noted, it does break functionality.

  • I too had to uninstall this update from all of my company's computers.  How can I find out when this issue is fixed and I can turn on Windows auto update again?

  • Your best bet to get that information would be to open a ticket with Microsoft Product Support Services. Last I checked, a one-time case costs roughly $250, but if it is considered a bug, your money is refunded. Given you're not the only person experiencing this issue, it is likely a bug.

  • Check out this thread: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/6f5e0910-8cdc-4b15-9569-7d3af997ac72/sharepoint-2013-wordexcel-and-kb3055034?forum=sharepointadmin

Lisa over in that thread has submitted a case to PSS and I will tomorrow as well.

No solution there yet, but maybe post anything you find in that one.

  • KB3055034 is installed to my user desktops - Office 2010 deployed. However, I am seeing this problem only on my external farm and not my internal farms.  Internal and external farms are patched through October 2015.

  • Similar experience with my farms: KB3055034 introduces this issue on my external farms but not on the internal ones.
