Hi,
I think the following links might be helpful:
Guidelines and checklist for buttons (Metro style apps)
Guidelines and checklist for app bars (Metro style apps)
XAML AppBar Button Styles for Windows 8
By the way, there's a software for making button icons:

Hope this information is helpful to you.

What do you mean by using icons to create a button? Do you mean how to create a button with just an image on it or do you mean something else? Are you trying to set a specific image or is this a more general question? For most iconic images apps should use glyphs from the Segoe UI Symbol font.

Hi,
if you're using XAML based designs you can have a look at Tim's blog post: http://timheuer.com/blog/archive/2012/03/05/visualizing-appbar-command-styles-windows-8.aspx
At the bottom there is a link to 150 predefined AppBarButtonStyles based on the Segoe UI Symbol font. Maybe this helps.
