Upgrading SQL Server 2005 SP4 To SQL Server 2008 R2 When Databases Are Mirrored RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have SQL Server 2005 with SP4.  We have just set up Mirroring.  Now they are talking about upgrading the version to SQL Server 2008 R2.  How does this effect the Mirroring?  Do you need to upgrade differently when the databases are Mirrored?  Do you need to undo the Mirroring?  We do not have a witness.

  • In simple terms

    1. First Upgrade Witness server SQL Instance to SQL 2008 (if you have)

    2. Upgrade mirroring db server instances to SQL 2008

    3. Faill-Over dbs onto upgraded SQL 2008 Mirroring db server that will  upgrade all your dbs from SQL 2005 SP4 to SQL 2008. Please aware after db failled-over onto SQL 2008 you won't be able to fallied them back on SQL 2005 until you upgraded new mirroring server version to SQL 2008

    4. Upgrade New mirroring server to SQL 2008.

Then your mirroring will be re-established automatically and databases start synchronising as normal.

NOTE - Please check this on non-production environments and test your all applications working as expected before start working production servers
