    Question

  • I noticed my WDP install shows a new storage controller, "Space Port".   To judge from the device details this is some sort of completely synthetic device.  There are no hardware resources attached to it, but it is there and loaded.   It is sign and authored by Microsoft, so I'm not worried it is malware.

    Anyone have a clue what it is?

  • Good question! Do I see it like it is used by IoRegisterShutdownNotification?

  • It's a driver for a storage device

    RtlCreateUnicodeString(&AllocatedString, L"Microsoft Storage Space Device");

    But I don't know what this Space device is :(

    It contains some SCSI functions:

    VmpScsiReadWrite

    and contains code to deal with Partitions:

    SP_DRIVE::CreateProtectivePartition
    SP_DRIVE::CreateDriveLayoutExGpt
    SP_DRIVE::CreateProtectivePartitionMbr
    SP_DRIVE::CreateDisk
    SP_DRIVE::SetDiskAttributes
    SP_DRIVE::GetDriveLayoutEx
    SP_DRIVE::GetDriveGeometry

    It also suports Transactions like NTFS:

    SDB_CONFIG::BeginTransaction

    We must wait for the Beta and an official documentation.

    Pretty sure that it relates to the new disk or drive pooling feature. A few
    scant details here:

    and

    I did see this as either a Role or Feature when I briefly played with
    Windows 8 Server. I'm on the road now and don't have access to my Windows 8
    server or I'd post a screen shot.
