Is there a way to disable the password hints?

    Question

  • Why is the password hint required in Windows 8? It could create a security risk because some users might put something that would make their password easy to guess, which could compromise the security of the entire network. Is there a way to disable it?

It might be fine for home computers for people who can never remember their passwords, but for a network where security is vital to protect confidential information or source code, the password hints are a bad idea. If someone forgets their password a LAN administrator can always reset it. They don't need hints to help malicious users hack into the system.

I don't think there is a way to disable it.

  • W4X7R4,

There are two options.  Turn your local account into Live ID account.  It won't have password hint.

    or

You can turn it off by changing your password in User Accounts in desktop Control Panel.  But if you do this way, you will lose all EFS-encrypted files, personal certificates, and stored passwords for Web sites or network resources.

    1. In desktop Control Panel, click on User Accounts
    2. Click on Manage another account
    3. Click on account you want to change
    4. Click on change the password
    5. Enter a new password
    6. Leave password hint blank
    7. Click on Change password.

Also, if Windows Developer Preview is on a domain, it will follow domain security policy instead and won't have password hint.
