My VM-role cannot be accessed by remote desktop RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I did everything following the instruction and successfully deployed my VM role. However, when I downloaded and opened the *.rdp file, it failed at the initializing stage. Just could not find the server. It even did not prompt a dialog asking for credential. Anyone had similar problem?

    Thanks a lot,

    Liang

    I remember that this issue was discussed in combination with rdp connection issues and VM roles here in this forum, perhaps this helps?

    Edit: David made some suggestions that were marked as answer a few weeks ago, perhaps this helps as well?

  • Hi Yul

    There are some issues with rpd and vm role - that I followed here. The last one I saw was a statement from Window Azure Platform Support - have you seen it yet?

    May be this solves your issue.

  • Hi Marc,

    Thank you for reply. I checked the problem in that webpage, but I think it does not apply to my case. I downloaded the latest Azure SDK  yesterday, and install it into a brand new windows 2008. Both the "cspack" command and the integration component image are from 1.4.

    I tested with only enabling two modules in the definition file:

    <Import moduleName="RemoteAccess" />

             <Import moduleName="RemoteForwarder" />

    and I am sure I enable both of them in the configuration file.  After the deployment, the default IIS can be accessed but the remote desktop never found the machine with the provided name. It is very like a firewall problem but I just don't know how to solve this.
    Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Liang

    here a post from Neil describing how to setup the RDP. I just had a funny issue right now with rdp and a webrole - RDP just did not run. What fixed the issue was downloading the rdp file from the management portal, edit it and remove the credential. After doing so, I was able to get again to the rdp connect screen, enter my user and password and connect to the requested instance. Funny issue here, perhaps you are experiencing the same?

  • Hi Marc,

    Thank you for all the help. I tried what you said. But it still does not work. I changed the rdp file as follows:

    full address:s:ncsa-vm3.cloudapp.net

    LoadBalanceInfo:s:Cookie: mstshash=ncsa-vmrole#ncsa-vmrole_IN_1

    But I still can not get to the credential prompt screen.

  • Hi Marc,

    The only thing I am suspecting is that the windows 2008 I am using is a free trial version downloaded from MS website. I downloaded 2 day ago. I was said to be available for 180 days. I wonder is it because the unactivated  OS?

  • Hi Marc,

    I check my vm. The two services "Window Azure Remote Access" and "Forward" can not be started when I was testing. I think this is the problem.

    This above picture show that the two services have already been started. But I do not know if they are started after being deployed to Azure, or can be started on a local VM.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Marc,

    Finally I successed. Thank you very much. I followed the solution on the webpage you gave, to set the startup way of those two services to "Automatic (Delay)". Another possibility is this time I did not install the Enterprise version, instead I used standard version.

    Anyway, it works now. But I have another question. I have 2 instances of the VM, but they are actually separated. They have different IPs. When I make any change to one machine, it does not synchronize the other one. So I wonder what is the beauty of having two or more instances in the cloud? I appreciate your reply. Thank you very much.
