Can I configure/make SPD2007 (Sharepoint Designer 2007) import also _vti_cnf to my PC? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can I configure/make SPD2007 (Sharepoint Designer 2007) import (FTP mode) also FP extensions (e.g. _vti_cnf files/folders) to my PC?

If there's no way with SPD2007, what free reliable software copy it without a problem?

Answers

  • No you can't.  SPD can only read and write files to and from the content databases of a system.  What free software would be appropriate depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

  • Hi Paul.

You asked a good question about what I'm trying to achieve:

Last year I lost on clear day my harddrive. Now I have a new PC in which I'm trying to have a copy of my website.

My website was originally built me perhaps by dreamweaver, and I maintained it first using FP (Frontpage), and in the recent years only using SPD2007.

I have no idea in websites, but my (very basic) knowledge is fine for what I need which is content update i.e. pictures and texts updates.

Since I need to keep updating my website, I first need to import or copy it to my PC. Then I could keep updating it using the SPD2007 which I installed it.

In the SPD2007 Import only the FTP option logs-in (HTTP doesn't). So I wondered what I should do to achieve this goal e.g. erasing all the FP extensions? or perhaps there's other way to have a copy? (I have no idea technically but my feeling is that my website contains but doesn't need any FP extensions functionality since I were the one who initially used FP to update my website i.e. texts/pictures)

Hope you will eventually be able to solve the issue.

  • Sorry, I don't have much experience working with SPD for non-SharePoint web sites.  I suspect you will either need something more like the original software to re-import the web site from your web server back to a personal Dev environment.

  • Thanks Paul. Hope someone here has an experience or knowledge on my specific issue (which supposed to be very common - the edge from FP to SPD2007).
