Encryption of sensitive data RRS feed

  • Question

  • I find DataProtectionProvider and SymmetricKeyAlgorithmProvider class to do seemingly the same things. My problem is to encrypt the sensitive static data of my application as well as the sensitive dynamic data. The static data could be stored in/as a resource. Is it necessary to encrypt resources as well? Could anyone hack into the dll and find the unencrypted data?

The dynamic data I must store on the users filesystem, therefore I want to encrypt it. Reading a lot about it and I find two classes: DataProtectionProvider and SymmetricKeyAlgorithmProvider. Which is the best suited for my goal? For which goals are these classes designed?

The SymmetricKeyAlgorithmProvider provides a lot of different algorithms. Is one better suited then the other?

I am writing a WinRT app (Windows RT 8.1) but want to migrate maybe later to Phone.
