If we buy VS2010 now will there be a low cost option to upgrade to VS11? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, apologies if this is the wrong forum for this question. I couldn't see anywhere more suitable.

We are on the brink of starting a major new development project, and plan to use VS2010, but I'm conscious that VS11 is being released later this year. If we were to buy VS2010 now (Professional edition, no MSDN), will there be any upgrade offers when VS11 is released? (The IT manager is keen on using Express in the short-term until VS11 is released, but I don't want to go down that road!)

    Thanks in advance

  • If we haven't made any pricing announcements yet (and I don't think we have) then there's nothing we can commit to for upgrade offers in the future.  Once they're announced you'll know what the upgrade options are, and I do not know what they are or will be.

Its likely that you can use the existing data point is the current options for upgrading from VS2008 to VS2010.  Probably the easiest to understand is at newegg:   It may be helpful to know that the upgrade to VS2010 price is something like 70% of the VS2010 retail price, at least on newegg.  Again I have no idea what it will be, but that may help you deal with some of the uncertainty you have before prices are announced.   (I found the link to newegg here:

Also, an MSDN Subscription will license you for both VS2010 and vNext (as long as the new one is released while you're an active subscriber), will let you upgrade from one to the other when you need to, and includes a bunch of other product as well.

    Hope this helps!
