The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted for thumbnail view. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently was downloading pictures from my HP camera to my computer. The camera became disconnected during the download. When I tried to view the folder in thumbnail view explorer.exe stops, the task bar disappears and then comes back. I checked the event log and found the "The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted." Event ID 1002. I can browse the folder in tile, detail, or list view but it will crash in Thumbnail view. And it appears to be affecting the parent folder as well. I have delete the folder and I am able to view the My Picture folder in thumbnail but the My Document folder will still crash explorer.exe if I try to view thumbnails. I saw a discussion that said to remove the DIVX codec but the problem still exists. I was able to download the pictures onto my laptop and view them with no problems. I put the pictures on a share on my server and if I view the share from the offending computer explorer.exe crashes. I can view the jpgs in any application.

I am running Windows XP Pro with SP3.
