In addition to the sample apps included in the Windows Developer Preview image, there are a number of code samples in the MSDN code gallery dealing with a wide range of aspects of the WinRT API surface and of developing Metro-style apps generally. You can find these at http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps. Each of these code samples will give you a Visual Studio solution that you can build and run from VS11. You'll need to be using the 64-bit image that includes the developer tools for that.

You can indeed browse and download the samples from the MSDN Samples Gallery at http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps.
You can download a sample pack that contains all the samples here http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/Windows-8-Modern-Style-App-Samples
You can also browse and open the samples directly from the Online tab in the New Project Dialog in Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview.
