Enterprise project level field. Limit to 255 characters? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi ,

I am using EPM 2007. If i create a project level enterprise custom field of the type "text". It allows only max of 255 characters.

When the entry is done for text field it does allow me to enter values of more than 255 characters(Project centre - select project - edit project information), but while saving only saves the first 255 characters.

Are these truncated characters stored somewhere so that i can view all the value that was entered or is there any other way possible if i want to show text more than 255 characters in the fields available within MS project 2007

  • Hello mp,

As per project server desgin, single line of text custom field can contain the 255 characters but if you want to have more than 255 characters, you can use multiline of text which can store upto 4000 characters, I believe. It doesn't save the truncated characters in database.
You can also use a Notes field at summary tasks which can have more than 255 characters.

Just a note: You cannot use the multiline of text fields in MPP, you can use this field in PDP so that PMs can enter the data.

    Hoep that helps.

  • Hi Amit,

Can you tell me how i use this multiline in MPP and where is this field stored in database and in which database (draft, published or reporting) so that i can pull up this field for the reports that we develop in PWA.

We wanted to use the notes field but then notes field is stored in published database; so we got to be a bit cautious to pull this out from published when we do custom reporting.

  • Hi mp,

As I mentioned that you cannot view the multiline of text in mpp.
you want the custom field to be multiple lines of text. This option is available only for Project Text fields. The project field created by using this option is not visible in the project information tab in Microsoft Project Professional. However, this field can be exposed by using a Web-based Project Detail Page.

You can update multiline text programatically using PSI:

When you create any project level field, It will be automatically added as a column in ProjectUserView of Project server reporting database.

You can run the query which will give you data stored in the column.
    select ProjectUID, <custom field name > from MSP_EpmProject_UserView where ProjectUID = ' <pass the project uid>'

On your second thought, using teh notes field, there is an excellent article by Christophe, You can use this as a ref:

  • Hi mp,

    Oops, My mistake.

Please use the second option to store the data as project summary level task.
