Get rid of the Quote button ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've noticed recently that threads have got longer but with no more content.

This is down to people starting to use the Quote button and adding a full quote of a previous message to their post.

Not only that but this takes up twice the space it would if it were a typical newsgroup-type quote.

    -------------------------

I would like to see the Quote button removed. It encourages the use of full quotes rather than part quotes and typically - because the quote doesn't pinpoint on the part of the question that is being commented on - it doesn't help a bit in understanding the answer.

By removing the Quote button, people who want to quote will have to select what they are quoting. The people who at present Quote All probably don't know how to Copy/Paste so full quotes would be a thing almost of the past.

Full Quotes are unsuitable for forums.

  • Hello Mike,

    You are absolutely correct .
For myself, i am often using the paste/copy of a part the question ( or answer ) of a poster and i surround the extract with double quotes.
But i have often difficulties to select correctly the part of a message and i understand that a poster would prefer a full copy.

A bug or am i going wrong ?

    Have a nice day

  • It was already brought up, the devs are considering it.  Guys, read the CTP feedback threads.

  • I do, I do. But my memory isn't perfect.

Do you never miss anything yourself ?

The thread I did see (Cindy started it I think) that mentioned Query didn't specifically (according to my memory) ask for it to be removed.

  • Mike:

I'm not sure I agree. I use Quote because the forum still does not display good threading information (but I do usually trim). The threaded view is better than in V3 but still does not work really well, and I am considering not using it (I never used it in V3).

I would oppose the removal of Quote until there is some indication on each response which post it is a response to. I have suggested more than once the simple addition of a line "In reply to XXX on YYY" immediately below (or to the right of) the current time of the response .

  • If only everyone would trim there would be no "argument" but I've already seen full quotes followed by a single line of new text. You can imagine how much % space of the entire post that single line took.
