Microsift Windows Update check-for-update takes forever

I have a Windows 7 (x64 bit) system. I routinely run Windows Update. The last time I ran Windows update successfully was in March 2016. When I run Windows-Update now, it takes forever for checking for updates. I tried to download and install the windows update client from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3135445, the problem persists. Need help. Thanks.

Although this isn't a development question...

You can install the June 2016 Update rollup which includes the most recent Windows update client. Be aware there are prerequisites. Apparently this has been superseded by a July 2016 update rollup. Or you can follow the guidance at http://wu.krelay.de/en/2016-07.htm
