What versions of MsBuild does the WDK invoke? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I know this is a strange question, but I have a tool for the WDK that uses a logger for MsBuild.  So for the following WDK's is the mapping below correct?

    WDK 8.0 - .NET 4.0 MsBuild

    WDK 8.1 - .NET 4.5 MsBuild

WDK 8.1 Update - .NET 4.5 (or is it 4.5.1) MsBuild

Since C#/.NET appear to require the logger to match exactly the version of MsBuild as far as the version of .NET, I am currently in a new form of DLL HELL and trying to at least see if there is a way to limit the chaos.

  • I would turn it around, what versions of msbuild invoke the wdk?  the mapping is correct, 8.1 update doesn't change any msbuild bindings. I think some of the pain you are experiencing if you manifest your DLL to load with different .net versions

  • Yes the pain I am experiencing is that I need to support WDK 8.0 and WDK 8.1 which means two loggers one with a manifest for each version of .NET.   Since there does not appear to be anyway to have a logger that has one executable file but works with multiple versions of .NET this is a pain.  It also means that I have the added pain of when VS2014 (or whatever) and WDK 9.0 come out, there will be yet another running around to make everything work, and have yet another version of the logger.  Truly a modern version of DLL hell.

  • I suggest you ask the .net // msbuild of loading issues you ask on the msbuild or .net forums, this issue is not unique to the wdk
