Link bars for navigation not working... RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hi everyone, this is my first post.  I recently purchased Expressions Web 4 to upgrade from Frontpage 2003.  WOW it's different!  I had FP down pretty well and had my website looking how I want it, but was starting to run into lots of FP extensions issues. So... finally decided to upgrade.  I feel like a baby just learning to walk, but am starting to get an idea of how to work Expressions after a ton of reading.

I think I have my site pretty much ready to go in Expressions, but am running into troubles getting the link bar to format correctly.  Here is a link to my test page: http://www.greengablesmininubians.com/2003%20kidstest.htm

Can  you tell me what is wrong with it? (some of the links show up as just text and mess up the layout - the pictures of the three kids should be centered on the page).  I followed the directions on this page to create the linkbar: http://expression.microsoft.com/en-us/dd571867.aspx

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • First, don't use spaces in file or directory names for websites. You are using a *lot* of them. That can cause problems. Leave no space, use a dash, or something - but don't use spaces. Now, the page you gave a link to does not have any navigation links that aren't links. So, which page does? Or, which link(s) aren't working?

  • Kathy is helping you with the links issue but you may also want to spend a little time with the Learning Resources section of the Before Posting sticky since there are tutorials there created with FrontPage users in mind like the Basic Website tutorial (get the asset file and work along with it.) As well as links to sites that are FrontPage to Expression Web migration specific.

  • Eliya,

You need to close the table after the unordered list:

    <li>blah blah </li>

    <li>blah blah </li>

    </ul>

</table>         you need to add this

I tried that and it centered your pic. Also, current practice is to try to avoid tables for lists and layout.

Thanks everyone.  Kathy, the links all work, but they are not all showing up as buttons.  There is supposed to be two rows of buttons and instead it is showing up like this: http://www.greengablesmininubians.com/button%20problem.png

I will change file names and remove the spaces.

George, I know tables are not the way to go, but I need to get my site up and running quickly so am working with tables as that's all I know right now.  I will be learning about other ways soon, but have a deadline, so need to get it working any way I can for now.  Thanks for mentioning it though!

  • That image is not of your published test page. You need to publish it if you want us to help with your display issues. We can't tell you what you've done wrong (other than, rather obviously, you haven't styled them all the same) from an image. When we ask for a link, we mean a link to the page showing the problem.  Your published test page does not show the problem.

  • The first link I listed is to my current website that I said was working (built with Frontpage).  The second address was to the test page that I was having problems with: http://www.greengablesmininubians.com/2003%20kidstest.htm  I am seeing the problem on this page like I showed it on the screen shot (although it seems to change which links it doesn't show the background for).

  • That link: http://www.greengablesmininubians.com/2003%20kidstest.htm does not show the problems, as I said. That's why we didn't understand what you were talking about. Clear your browser cache, try a different browser, etc..  I am not seeing what you are seeing.

  • Hmmm.  That is odd.  I have viewed it on different computers and different browsers (Mozilla Firefox and IE).  I will clear the cache, try again and let you all know.
