Team Foundation Server - Chat feature RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Guys,

I want to know if there is any chat feature built-in in either Team Explorer client OR TSWA (web access) that can serve as a purpose of communication between various users who are logged into TFS.

I am currently looking for Team Foundation Server 2010.

Please share some information on this.

    Regards,

    Nitin

  • Just to jump in here...

    1. Yes, although I've only seen providers for Windows Live Messenger and Microsoft Office Communicator.  Others (e.g. Yahoo, GMail, etc.) may be available - I just haven't seen them with my configuration.

    2. Only the logging features of the IM client itself - e.g. Windows Live Messenger can be setup to automatically log every chat.  This is not something inherent to Visual Studio/Team Explorer.

    Hope this helps.

  • This is something interesting.Thanks

Ewald, i can see that there is a tool called "Team Member". Apparently my requirement of chat plug seems to me little reachable. However i have below questions:

    1. Is this tool "Team Member" available in isolation OR as a part of set ?

    2. Is it free for use with licensed copies of Team Explorer, Team Foundation Server 2010 ?

    3. It can be used with Team Explorer 2010 AND Team System Web Access?

    4. It has internal messaging system which can help users spread geographically to communicate correct?

    5. From where i can download this tool if free for use?

    6. Its not a trial version isnt and can be deployed on production when required, correct?

  • Sorry..i didnt framed point 4 properly.

After you gave me that hint of "Team Member", i investigated and found the below link :

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bharry/archive/2008/10/01/preview-of-the-next-tfs-power-tools-release.aspx

    The concerns are:

    1. "Team Member" does not have its own messaging system. E.g most the website has "Live Chat" link where a new window opens and a user can chat with the support person. Rather "Team Member" provides a set of API which can help Team Explorer to connect to IM tools like Skype, Live Messenger, Yahoo, Gmail etc. This is what i have understood. Is this correct?

    2. Is there any auto log facility where chat gets stored automatically?
