Blank dialog after VS2015 splash.

    Question

  • I'm going completely insane, I've been trying to fix this for a week...

When I open VS (admin or not), I get this empty dialog (the activation one):

I've tried everything. Completely remove Visual Studio and anything that's vaguely linked to it, reinstall, fix, open devenv.exe with every available command ("/Resetusersettings", "/safemode", etc...). Absolutely nothing works. The only solution that appears to be left is reinstall Windows, but obviously, I'd rather not.

It appears to be an issue with a certain "ConnectedUserPackage", considering that these are the last entries in "AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0\ActivityLog.xml":

Would somebody have a solution before I end up in a psychiatric hospital?

  • Thanks a lot for your help, but in the end, it appears that YET ANOTHER repair finally worked. It threw me a few errors about C++ Redistributable failing because another version was installed or something, but VS now appears to work. Kind of. Now I'm getting a "couldn't download license" error. Sorry if it's in French, but here's a screenshot:

The message says (after I try to login) "We weren't able to download a license, check your internet connexion or your proxy settings. I've done both. And I reset IE's internet settings. (IE works fine, except I need to launch it as admin, or it doesn't open. And yes, I'm running VS as admin).

EDIT: Setting trusted sites (where I added https://login.microsoftonline.com/, https://login.live.com/, etc...) in IE to minimum security appears to have fixed the problem

  • Hi PWDiv Apps,

    Thank you for your post.

From your description and the screenshot, the VS install packages are missing or corrupted.

You have tried many solutions but not work, did you try to use a good iso to repair your VS?

If not. to eliminate internet variables, I suggest that you download the ISO, verify the SHA-1 to ensure the ISO is not corrupt, then install locally.

VS 2015 iso Microsoft official download link:
    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs.aspx
VS 2015 iso files SHA-1 Values link:
    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/visual-studio-2015-iso-sha1-vs.aspx

PS: To make sure whether your package is corrupted or not,
please use FCIV.exe http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841290  to verify hash of the ISO.

Besides, in order to narrow down the problems of VS setup, you should make sure you’ve followed these tips:

     http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vssetup/thread/60f71a54-506e-4c70-be98-e993ce6d1ddf

If the above still doesn't help, I need you installation log file to troubleshoot this issue,
please use  http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.zip from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to  https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link here
