Continue using the same Azure Backup when changing physical server with the same directories and files RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, We have a backup files of a physical server in Azure Backup for months. The content, the files, of the server is going to be migrated to a new physical server and we would need to keep the previous backup and make the new ones as incremental copies. Not as a new computer and new files. How can I do it?

  • Azure backup agent locates files and folders where the agent is installed and the server/client is registered to the vault. If you migrate the content (files) from the old server to the new one the backup agent will look for the files from the registered server (old server) if it doesn't find the files you want to backup it will fail backups with error "no files found in the specified location".

In short, if you migrate the files to a new server the backup of these files will not happen since it is not a registered server.

Regarding the previous backups, those backups will remain in the vault as long as the vault is not deleted.

  • Thanks for your answer.

The idea is to install the Azure Backup Agent in the new server and the new server will do the backup. The old server will disappear. In this case the local path of all files are the same but it's a different server/agent id.

Is it not possible to use the before backup in Azure and continue with the new server?

With another local backup software, like Veeam f.e., it's possible to migrate the backup configuration to other physical server and use the before backups.

If it's not possible and it will be another backup for Azure. Any other possibility to not lose the history of backup in Azure?

  • You can migrate the data to a different machine. However, you can restore data to an alternate machine

    For your reference: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-azure-file-folder-backup-faq#manage-backups

    Hope that clarifies!
