Sql server maintenance plans RRS feed

  • Question

  • hi.

i would like  to create a sql server maintenance plan in order to do a scheduled backup of my databases. i have two machines - a staging server for testing purposes and my live server. both are running ontop of w2k3 and using sql 2005 (not express). on the staging server, in "sql managment studio", there is a node for maintenance plans, where it's quite easy to create a new plan.

on my production server, this node is missing in managment studio. i'm not aware of anything special i did on the staging server to make this node appear, but obviously i did something different.

what do i need to do in order to get the "maintenance plans" node in managment studio ?

  • May be that you are connecting to an express edition with SSMS full version and that may be the reason for missing maintenance and agent icons.
Can you use the same SSMS to connect to anyother edtions except express and see if those icon comes up.
    Thanks, Leks

  • You may try uninstall/install SSMS.  Let us know if works.

    Thanks!

  • just realized: i also don't have integratino services, full text search and sql-server-agent in the sql configuration manager.

this installation used to be a sql express installation. however, it is now a "real" sql2005 (eneterprise) setup. maybe the previous express install is creating problems ?

  • Yes you might be right here . What is the select @@version and SSMS or SSMSEEs version ?
SQL express edition doesnt support agent or maint plans.

  • Leks,

i can't connect to another editions installation: that particular machine is not on my network and has no other edition it could connect to locally.

i just looked under "services", and it says there "Sql server (express)". so i assume, the sql server 2005 setup simply did not upgrade the engine itself but just installed the mgmt tools etc.

is there a way i can upgrade the engine inplace from sql 2005 express to full sql? (i thought installing from the enterprise cd would do this...)

  • Leks,

thanks. but this doesn't work. setup will only let me install/uninstall the desktop componentes, not the engine ones.

guess i'll just uninstall all of sql server(express or not) and reinstall from scratch.
