Simplest way to backup Hyper-v VMs RRS feed

 • Question

 •
Hi Gentle People,

I have a sever running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. We use its hyper-v functionality to host two different virtual servers (production & test of the same enviroment). The virtual servers support only one application and its MS-SQL 2005 database. We have Windows Server backup.

What is the simplest way to make backup copies of these VMs, from which we can recover if we need to? They are not large, both servers live happily in a 20Gb volume on the host server. We do not have an IT department so it needs to be quick or automated, and I would rather not have to stop then restart the VMs each time (unless that can also be automated).

I have read so many different options and approaches to doing this that I am now totally confused. any removal of mud from these particular waters would be gratefully received.
