Cannot Access Azure Files Storage Service From File Explorer When UAC is Turned On

    Question

  • Folks:

I created a Files storage account on Azure and had no problem uploading data using File Explorer from a Windows 2012 R2 server.

I then created a group policy to apply a NET USE command to map a drive letter to the storage account.  At a workstation, I opened a command prompt, ran a GPUPDATE command to update the policy, and it worked.  When I queried NET USE in the command prompt, I saw the Azure drive.  Great.  And when I ran a DIR command, it reported the drive's contents correctly.  So all is good in the Command Prompt world.

BUT the drive does not appear in File Explorer.  However, if I turn UAC off, the Azure drive DOES appear in File Explorer.  I can't leave UAC off, both for safety reasons and because Microsoft Edge won't run when UAC is off.

Does anyone know how to work around this problem?
