Pause Installation Files' Download - Offline Installer

    Question

  • Hi,

While following the steps on https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/install/create-an-offline-installation-of-visual-studio the process is good, it is Very Lengthy, and I don't have to sit more than day at office. Perhaps there could be some way to pause the download of installation files of VS 2017 and continue the same once I reach home?

The process going on is vs_community.exe --layout c:\vs2017offline to make a folder with the installation files downloaded upon the same.

  • Hi Faraz A. Qureshi,

    Welcome to MSDN forum.

When we use /layout to create an offline installer for visual studio, it is impossible to pause the current process of downloading and then continue it. It need a good network connection, in your case, you put your laptop to hibernation which is the cause of the issue.

Some components of visual studio have failed to download, I recommend you need to redownload visual studio, because some package or a parent package had a vital failure. You could find a computer and let it download visual studio alone(please make sure the computer has good network connection). After this, you could copy it to your laptop.

    Best regards,

    Joyce

  • If you don't have a stable internet connection and data pack which is enough to download visual studio 2017 offline, your actions to download is futile.

To over come this problem....  there is another way. But it will reduce the critical things... little bit i guess.

instead of downloading the over all visual studio in a single shot... you can download it ...part by part.

    Those are called "workloads".

Download those workloads one by one... into the same target folder. when done... u can perform the offline installation .

Simple...  instead of downloading 10 folders which are in a single folder....    you are downloading those 10 folders one by one into the single folder.

    Got it ???
