Track Kinect camera position RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Im asking this question because I didn't find any answers but only body position tracking.

What Im curious about is to know if using the kinect camera itself it would be possible to determine its position (translation) and rotation ?

As the camera in pointing at the environment I suppose it could understand if the camera is moving in one direction or another but could be remain stable if something is moving in front of it? The idea would be to look at the variation between multiple frames and multiple reference points.

    Does it seems possible?

Thanks a lot for your answers

  • The camera has no knowledge of where it is in the "world". The term "world" is abstract given that you have to have some reference to determine what that is. For example, is the world in relation to a desk/chair in a room in a building on a street... As the developer you define the world(0,0,0 coordinate) and as you move the sensor you have to determine that delta.

The accelerometer data can accessed by using AccelerometerGetCurrentReading:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj663790.aspx

From there you can calculate a world coordinate position.
