UWP build release error "Could not find an existing platform WinMD location"

    Question

  • I'm trying to build release my universal app, but always I get this error :

"Could not find an existing platform WinMD location".

I have already seen this "https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/newthread???category=visualstudio&forum=visualstudiogeneral", but the file C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\.NetNative\Microsoft.NetNative.targets exists.

I uninstalled and reinstalled VS2015 and Update 2 many times, but error still remain.

At the moment, I'm not able to release my app.

    Any ideas ?

  • I solved the problem.

For some reason, the file Windows.winmd was missing in path c:\program files (x86)\windows kits\10\Metadata\ .

I copied from another pc and now I'm able to build release.

  • Hi B.Fritz ,

Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.

Could you please tell us what’s your OS version? Is it win 10?

If so, some community members have faced similar issue as yours. please see:

    https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/2558411/uwp-projects-couldnt-be-run-after-changing-storage-folder-in-settings

You may have a try about changing default save location disk from C to another one in Settings - System - Storage - you will be not able to debug UWP apps in Visual Studio.
Upgrading system to latest should resolve the problem.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Lana,

    my system is :

    Windows 10 Pro 64bit

Visual Studio 2015 Community version 14.0.25123.00 Update 2

Visual Studio Tools for Universal Windows Apps   14.0.25219.00

No, I did not change default save location.

My problem is related to build release not debug.
