EWS for Web based add-ins for Outlook RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are trying to develop a web based Add-In but have a few queries related to EWS:

Microsoft documentation states that EWS must be enabled and must be exposed to the internet for on premises installations of Exchange Server.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/add-ins/add-in-requirements

    Questions:

    1. 1. Do all web based Add-Ins require EWS to be enabled on the server?
    2. 2. Is it mandatory for EWS to be exposed to the internet for AddIns to work?

Our customer has an on premises installation of Exchange Server and has EWS enabled, but does not want to expose it to internet for security reasons.

The Add-In we are trying to develop is for internal employees only and will not be accessed from outside the company network zone.

  • Hi Siddharth_Sopra,

You had asked,"Do all web based Add-Ins require EWS to be enabled on the server?"

It is a requirement for on premises installation's of Exchange server. So yes, all web based Add-Ins require EWS to be enabled on the server

Other thing you had asked,"Is it mandatory for EWS to be exposed to the internet for AddIns to work?"

Yes, As per documentation ,it is mandatory for EWS to be exposed to the internet for AddIns to function properly.

  • Hi Deepak,

    Thanks for your answer.

Yes, the documentation states that it should be exposed to the internet which our customer is reluctant to do because of security reasons.

If the AddIn just makes use of Office.js library and does not make any direct EWS calls, is it still required?

Any further and in depth explanation based on experience and something more then what the publicly available documentation states will be helpful to us in making a correct decision.

If an expert from Microsoft can answer this, it will be helpful.

Sorry but this answer was not helpful.

  • Hi Siddharth_Sopra,

There are multiple librarys like Office.js and Outlook.js which is required in Outlook AddIn. As the document indicates, EWS to be exposed to Internet is required by AddIn function, I think it is not required if you did not use any EWS features. Built-in function which is called by Outlook AddIn itself would not require EWS.
