  • Question

  • Does any one know how long it takes to get the WHQL signed .cat file once the changed .inf file is submitted to (processing time)

Do I have to get the Code Signing Certificate renewed each year to keep .cat validated every year?

  • The question is a couple of months old but still worth an answer. From our experience with sysdev, if the submitted package is OK, the response time from Microsoft is just a few hours. If there are any kind of problems, there seems to be an additional manual verification step from the sysdev team and the process will take a few days. So it is always better to double- and triple-check a package before submitting it.

The .cat remains valid even if the certificate is not renewed, but it should not be revoked either (an expired certificate is very much different from a revoked certificate.) This is the same process as when signing any executable file, if there is a timestamp associated with the signature (which is the case for .cat files signed by Microsoft), the signature remains valid unless the certificate is revoked.
